On this holy day, it is fitting to think on how religions have pronounced on GREED:
] “You have despised the poor. Is it not the rich man who oppress you, and drag you before the judgment seats?” [James 2:6]
] “Muslims are warned in the Quran to be on guard against greed. A Muslim should not save and hoard great sums of money, but should distribute it to those who are in need of it.” [Zakat Foundation of America}
]. “Greed is an imperfection that defiles the mind; hate is an imperfection that defiles the mind; delusion is an imperfection that defiles the mind.” [The “three poisons” for Buddhists]
] “Nowhere in Judaism is greed or selfishness encouraged…Charity, kindness, and using wealth for good pop up again and again..” [Big Think}
] “Greed is one of the six ararthas [unwanted qualities]. It makes one act sinfully. A greedy person can never experience satisfaction. A greedy person can never be happy.” [ major beliefs of Hinduism, 3/24/24]
] “Take heed, and beware of greed, for a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things he possesses.” [Luke 12:15]
] “It is never acceptable to earn a living by doing wrong. – “O you who have believed, do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent.” [Quran 4:89 – Zakat Foundation of America]
] “A wicked man takes a bribe secretly to pervert the ways of justice.” [Proverbs 17:23]
]. “You shall not take each other’s money illicitly, nor shall you bribe the officials to deprive others of some of their rights illicitly, while you know.” [Quran 2:188 – University of Texas; Koran excerpts]
] “Listen now, you rich men: weep and wail for the miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches have corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have cankered, and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. You have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who have harvested your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have entered into the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived in pleasure and luxury on earth; you have fattened your hearts, as for the day of slaughter. You have condemned and killed the righteous, one who does not resist you.” [James 5: 1-6]
