On July 26, 1920, H.L. Mencken said this: “As democracy is perfected, the office of the president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. One some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron.”
105 years later, America has that person in the White House. The only question of great importance is now this: in his remaining 3 1/2 years in office, how much more DAMAGE can D.J. Trump do to America, what’s left of American ‘democracy,” American norms, American decency, America’s economy, America’s reputation, American law, American education, the First Amendment, American national debt, American small businesses, America’s National Parks, American civil rights, America’s natural environment, the very concept of truth………………….
Luckily for Mencken, “The Evening Baltimore Sun” newspaper existed in a time when a president with a thin skin, a colossal ego, desire for “revenge”. on any and all who make him look bad [regardless whether it was true] was not in office.
One wonders what commentators like Mark Twain, the Muckrakers, and Will Rogers would say about Donald Trump. And, of course, one wonders how long it would be before Trump threatened them with the power and wealth of “our” federal government; how long before he sued the writer and their newspaper; how long before Trump threatened to cancel their citizenship; how long before Trump said they were “old,” “fat,” “ugly,” “stupid,” “a knucklehead.”
One wonders what specious, bogus, questionable, or outright falsehood would be the ‘grounds” for suing Mencken, Twain, Muckrakers, or Rogers. Would it be “a threat to national security,” “a threat to the president’s “vision,” “antisemitism,” “a need for efficiency and to eliminate waste and fraud,” “displaying dangerous D.E.I. tendencies,” that it violates “common sense” [hang on to your wallets when ANY Republican or R-W spokesperson uses this term!], that it “presented disturbing material like to offend good Americans,” that it “presented material likely to make some good Americans self-conscious,” that it “presented material making good Americans feel guilty” [anything suggesting slavery wasn’t fun], that it is “a hoax,” that it was “old news,” that “it was guilty of being ‘liberal bias’ [claiming 2 plus 2 equals 4], that ‘it was divisive” [saying the North won the Civil War], that it was “a feminist falsehood” [saying no woman had been president!], “we need a tax cut” [standard GOP operating principle; one state Republican claimed the cure for COVID-19 was a tax cut!!!], saying that despite Trump’s denials, he did know the person in question [as illustrated by 6 pictures, pre-A.I., of the two together], whatever else the Heritage Foundation or “Project 2025” authors can DREAM UP…………….

THIS – from a person who is a member of a family that: “Dementia apparently runs in the Trump family: Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump, Sr., was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease…Fred Trump III has stated that he saw “warning signs” of cognitive decline in his aunt Maryanne before her death in November 2023.” [Sam Uretsky; The Progressive Populist; July, 2025]

Beside all this – apply a simple test, from the Constitution’s Preamble: “We, the People of the United States…to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare…do ordain and establish this Constitution..” Examine Trump policies, laws, etc. from 2017-21, and 2025. – which ones, if ANY, achieve these goals – most especially “..to promote the general Welfare..” ?????????
Some Trumpian results:
1] “Price for steel in U.S. is on the rise” [Peter Eavis; New York Times; 7/23/25]: [1] “American steel-makers are raising prices, forcing new costs on domestic manufacturers..[because]. “U.S. producers have more power to opportunistically increase their prices..” [2] “The company {Daimler Truck] said last week that it had reduced its workforce by about 2,000 employees..”
2] “Dream to become a doctor derailed”. [Jill Burcum; Minnesota Star Tribune; 7/23/25]: “With Minnesota and the nation facing an alarming shortage of physicians in the next decade..’ Trump’s cuts to the Graduate Plus loan program and limits the amount of federal loans students can take out..” many people wanting to train to be doctors can’t “Rural areas..already face “severe shortages of primary care physicians.”… The American Medical Colleges estimate the U.S. will be short about 86,000 doctors by 2036. Already 1 in 3 rural doctors plan on leaving.
3]. On 6/7/25, this site posted in “Trump DICTATORSHIP XXXI” – “Long Term Damage to Health and Science” four specific damages Trump’s policies WILL DO to YOUR health and well being. We mentioned having “a manilla envelope bulging with similar Trump stupidities on health alone from his first 4 months.”
4] An upcoming post on this site will address Trump’s threat to American national security – policies, firings of recognized security experts, transfers to catch immigrant “criminals” from various other FBI and security forces – thus weakening THOSE services !!!!!!!!!!!! PLUs – don’t forget how Trump has stupidly sabotaged American “soft power’ around the world, and, stupidly making enemies for crazy theories.
*****. WHO. is the real “numbskull” !?!?!?!?????? Just use this easy test: o Trump policies, laws, orders, rhetoric, etc. “..promote the general Welfare..” ????? What is the FACTUAL record for 2017-21, 2025 ???????? Are YOU, is America “better off’. because of Trump’s actions????? How do foreign people and governments NOW view America?????

The Trump DICTATORSHIP – Stupidity, Cruelty, Corruption, Craziness. XXXXVIII – Trump Betrays Rural America
*** “Nobody is qualified to become a statesman who is entirely ignorant of the problem of wheat.” [ Socrates ]
On of the most callous violations of the American people by the Trump DICTATORSHIP has been its betrayal of rural America, a group of citizens who largely put Trump in the White House. We begin SOME of the evidence of this massive stab in the back with. “Six Ways Trump’s Budget Will Hurt Rural America” [Michael Chameides; The Progressive Populist; July, 2025] – followed by 14 more examples:
1] “It guts rural healthcare. The bill would drastically cut Medicaid and impose new barriers to care…In some states, 50% of rural children get healthcare from Medicaid.”
2] “It takes food off the tables of rural people. The plan includes approximately $290-$319 billion in cuts to SNAP…More than 15% of families in small towns and rural areas rely on this support to feed their families.
3] “It shifts costs to state and local governments. State and local governments in rural areas depend more on federal funding from programs like SNAP and Medicaid than other states.”
4]. “It takes away local control….this bill would overrule state and local laws and ordinances.”
5]. “It ends clean energy and infrastructure funding….Ending these tax credits will increase household energy costs, which are already higher in many rural communities.”
6] “It gives handouts to agribusiness and mega farms…Leaders in Congress are using the budget reconciliation process to give big farms a $50 billion windfall…more family farmers would lose their farms.”
“In short, this bill would make it harder for rural people to meet their basic needs – all so the wealthy and corporations can avoid paying their fair share of taxes like the rest of us do.”
Now – on with 14 more examples of how Trump betrays rural America – headlines. Read if you must.:

11] 7/19/25 – “The Tyranny of trhe American Farm lobby” [Michael Grunwald; New York Times]: “The domestic plicy bill..President Trump signed..accelerates the egregious bipartisan tradition of showering taxpayer dollars on well-off farmers…His tariffs will increase the price of imported food. His immigration crackdown will increase the price of domestic food by threatening the farm labor work force.”
12]. 7/19/25. – “After Decades of Trying, G.o.P. Guts PBS and NPR”. [Jim Rutenberg; New York Times]. ***!!! Access this article. Note on page 1 – two maps for radio and TV – and these categories on U.S. maps: “cities with vulnerable stations; affected ZIP codes; counties with limited local news access.” These “communication deserts” are ALMOST ALL. in rural America. 13] 7/1/25. – “Medicaid cuts will close rural hospitals, worsen health crisis”. [Aaron Brown; Minnesota Star Tribune]: Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” “..is neither fiscally conservative nor reform-minded. it’s an expensive slurry of tax cuts for the rich and President Trump’s political grievances….This hurts everyone…All patients, rich or poor, working or not, will suffer because you can’t use fancy insurance at a hospital that doesn’t exist. You can’t work there, either. Small-town hospitals are typically the largest employer in their region.””

Few farms were spared, but smaller and newer ones have been disproportionally harmed..”

The Trump DICTATORSHIP – Stupidity, Cruelty, Corruption, Craziness, XXXXVII – Will We Have A Real Deomcracy on 1/20/2029 ???
*** “At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us….If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” [ Abraham Lincoln ]
America is a different society, a different country, than it was in 2015. America has been INFECTED with a destructive virus: antidemocracyism. Calculating and cynical forces have been unleashed. Hatred, greed, suspicion have been unleashed. Religious intolerance, masquerading as “religious freedom,” has been unleashed. YOU have been told to be afraid – of “them.” The mass middle class prosperity of 1947-73 has been DELIBERATELY DESTROYED. Norms of decency and respect for others have been destroyed. “Democracy” isn’t just rules and laws. “Democracy” used to be how we as Americans treated each other. “Democracy” is intent to “..promote the general Welfare..” America is not, never has been perfect – but from 1901-1980, America was, BY INTENT, taking strides toward achieving a real Democracy. But – step-by-step, since 1981, mass democracy – one that tried to “..promote the general Welfare..”, has been DELIBERATELY SABOTAGED. By whom ???
By. TEAM FAR RIGHT – by “supreme court” corruption, by tax laws favoring already obscenely rich, by a coordinated propaganda war to convince YOU that black is white, by legislation at state and federal levels taking away 1901-1980 democratic reforms.
Since 2015 – all this deliberate antidemocratic destruction has been on steroids. A man whom some have called “a fascist to the core,” “a moron,’ “a flawed person,” a man whom many describe as having two priorities: greed and revenge – has been INFECTING America with his warped conduct; most especially with his LYING; his often monumental cruelty; his poisonous rhetoric; his transactional conduct; a man who has desecrated the office once held by Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Eisenhower; a man whi has weakened the very soul of America.
*** “Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court, can save it.”

{Note: following are excerpts from David Brooks’ May, 2025, The Atlantic article: “Everything We Once Believed In…Trumpism has replaced conservatism’s core values with just one: the raw pursuit of power.” As an American, YOU OWE it to yourself to read the entire article. ]:
1]. “I have thought of America as a deeply flawed nation that is nonetheless a force of tremendous good in the world…Since January 0, 2025.. I have watched America behave vilely…the best description for what I”m feeling is moral shame: To watch the loss of your nation’s honor is embarrassing and painful. George Orwell is a useful guide to what we are witnessing.”
2]. “Russell Vought, Donald Trump’s budget director, sounds like he walked straight out of ..”1984″…”we want them to not want to go to work, because they are increasingly viewed as the villains…We want to put them in trauma.”…Trump has caused suffering…..suffering…..suffering…..Trump..isn’t just declaring war on ‘wokeness”; he’s declaring war on Christian service – on any kind of service, really.”
3]. “If there is an underlying philosophy driving Trump, it is this: Morality is for suckers. The strong do what they want…Day after day, the administration works to create a world where ruthless people can thrive…His first term gradually eroded norms and acclimatized America to a new sort of regime…he’s making the globe a playground for gangsters…Trumpism has become a form of nihilism that is devouring everything in its path.”
4] “..Trump may have campaign as a MAGA populist..he governs as a Palm Beach elitist…The MAGA elite rode to power on working-class votes…they don’t care about the working class…Trump and his crew could have taken office with actual plans to make life better for working-class Americans…These faux populists have no interest in that.”
5]. “It turns out..when you mix narcissism and nihilism, you create an acid that corrodes every belief system it touches. This Trumpian cocktail has eaten away at Christianity…if Trumpianism has a central tenet, it is untrammeled lust for worldly power….The Nietzschean Ubermenschen – which Trump and Musk clearly believe themselves to be – offer the premise of domination over those sick sentimentalists who practice compassion.”
6]. “Trumpian nihilism has eviscerated conservatism. The people in this administration are not conservatives…Trumpism trashes moral norms in every direction…Trump bulldozes checks and balances…the Trump administration couldn’t care less about promoting democracy – or about human dignity.”
7]. “..we have reached a point of traumatic rupture. A demagogue has come to power and is ripping everything down..what’s likely to happen is..the demagogue will start making mistakes, because incompetence is built into the nihilistic project…Authoritarian nihilism is inherently stupid…They are pathologically self-destructive. When you create an administration in which one man has all the power and everybody else has to flatter his voracious ego, stupidity results. Authoritarians are also morally stupid. Humility, prudence, and honesty..are practical tools that produce good outcomes. When you replace them with greed, lust, hypocrisy, and dishonesty, terrible things happen…. When Trump creates an unnecessary crisis, its unlikely to be a small one.”
8]. ‘..although Trumpism’s collapse is a necessary condition for national recovery, it is not a sufficient one. Its demise must be followed by the hard work necessary to achieve true civic and political renewal.” [ Brooks provides six things America must do to repair the damage to US that Trumpism has caused. ]
Think of Trumpism as a plague, a pandemic. It has attacked the body of American democracy. America will NOT. BE. HEALTHY. until the last vestiges of Trumpism have been expunged. The cure will be more democracy. It will be a return to what was achieved between 1947-1980 economically – a SHARING of America’s wealth, NOT tax cuts for the rich. It will be a return to government that cares about ordinary people – NOT one that cuts funding for health, education, government services. Itr will be one in which civil rights are once again available to ALL Americans – a simple decency, one that thinks most people are good, NOT “bad.” It will be a society in which WE strive for love and respect – NOT one in which some people get rich by promoting hatred, some get rich by LYING and spreading falsehoods.
Donald Trump has been a cancer. America will not be healthy as long as he and his disciples have ANY power, are listened to by ANYBODY. Trump as president isn’t just a NIGHTMARE – him being elected twice is an embarrassment. People around the world look at America differently BECAUSE ‘we’ elected him. What is wrong with the Americans? How could they have been so stupid?
But – unfortunately, Trump isn’t alone. The greatest mass murders of al, time – Stalin, Hitler, Mao – didn’t kill millions. Their followers did. Trump hasn’t murdered American democracy by himself – his followers, his enablers, his funders, his apologists did. The beginning of the end of the Trumpian nightmare MUST start with individual acts of courage from people like YOU. Must continue with the 2026 elections. Must continue until no fragment of the Trumpian virus infects OUR society and government. The post- World War II Germans have shown us how it can be done. WE can do this. BUT – let YOUR voice be heard, please.

More, DELIBERATE, Misinformation – for Political “Gain” by Various Perps on thr Right
A well regarded Minnesota politician – Melissa Hortman – was assassinated. Police soon caught the gun man. People who knew him testified to his political beliefs. But – people on the political right decided to take advantage of this tragedy – by deliberately spreading falsehoods. Consider the following examples from Elwood Watson’s August, 2025 column in The Progressive Populist:
1] “Several Republican politicians, including Vice President J.D. Vance, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, and Louisiana Representative Steve Scalise [whose life a Black, liberal, lesbian police officer saved], blamed the shooting on the “far left” and liberals’ continual demonization of President Donald Trump.”
2]. “Right-wing social media personality Mike Cernovich..amplified the falsehood that Governor Tim Walz demanded the assassination. Laura Loomer, a far-right conspiracy theorist and Trump whisperer, posted that “Walz’s goons are now assassinating lawmakers who support legislation Walz opposes” and denounced the Democratic Party as a “terrorist organization.””
3] “Elon Musk, a Trump “frenemy” and frequent poster of unproven right-wing claims..quote-tweeting claims “the left” killed Hortman and writing “the far left is murderously violent.” Viva Frei, a right-wing X user..posted a thread casting doubt on suspected shooter Vance Boelter being a Trump supporter.”
4] “His roommate, D.C., told reporters Boelter voted for Trump and “was a strong supporter of the president. Other longtime friends told local media Boelter was right-leaning.”
For perspective – consider the following excerpt from Nathan Pemberton”s 7/13/25 New York Times article: “The Radical Trolls Who Are Influencing the White House”:
“If you want to know where Republican politics is heading, look at the memes. Since the start of its second term, the Trump administration and its G.O.P. surrogates have been crashing out onlne. Like an unhinged Zoomer, they’ve relentlessly posted sadistic memes about policy decisions in the style of social media trends. A highlight reel of ICE arrests set to “Ice Ice Baby.” An A.S.M.R.-style video that features people in shackles boarding a deportation flight. An image of a woman being arrested, rendered in the style of a Hayao Miyazaki movie. The Vice President has threatened his critics with deportation via a GIF image. One Republican congressman even suggested that an undocumented migrant be thrown out of a helicopter, Pinochet style.”
Once, a Republican President said that trust was what held government together. Much later, a leader of another country said; ‘A lie told often enough becomes the truth.’ His name was V.I. Lenin.
THE question is very simple: If we allow, encourage blatant lying – then how much longer will American democracy last? If blatant falsehoods get rewarded – then how do we have the necessary public debates ghat lead to intelligent, rational policy decisions like mitigating climate change crisis [which some claim to be “a hoax]?????
If one political ‘side” NEEDS perceived “enemies’ to be against, who ‘must” be eliminated – then are they required to lie??? If one political ‘side” NEEDS perceived “enemies’ to stoke fear, hatred, and anger – then are they required to act against these ‘enemies’ by ANY. means – in order to “save America”????????
If some people are willing to lie about an assassination. – what else are they willing to lie about ???????
The Present, And Worsening Threat Of Irrationality And Blatant Lies To Democracy
*** “Human beings are perhaps never more frightening than when they are convinced beyond doubt
that they are right.” [ Laurens van der Post ]
What does it mean for a society, especially for a “democratic” society, when it is infected by waves of IRRATIONALITY and obvious, deliberate, blatant LIES. When the goal of some is to create doubt, confusion, and division?
Consider the following examples for a beginning”
– vaccines are “bad”
– climate change crisis is “a hoax”
– the 2020 American presidential election was “stolen”
– immigrants are “stealing American jobs”
– cutting taxes for the rich is “good” for America, benefits will “trickle down” to ME
– America was founded as a “Christian nation”
***. “There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.” [ Goethe ]
1]. vaccines are “bad”. – Among other things, health improved in the 20th century because of scientific advances such as public health measures, improved sanitation, new medical knowledge – and vaccines. Just one current example: measles were declared eliminated in America around 2000. then anti-vaxxers gained influence – and we have serious outbreaks among mostly unvaccinated people. American schools routinely required students get vaccinated against highly infectious diseases. then – anti-vaxxers gained influence – some diseases are making comebacks. COVID 19 is a glaring example of unvaccinated people dying in greater numbers – and the threat they posed to people around them. Many wore masks longer, stayed away from crowds because of the threat to THEIR health by people refusing to get COVID 19 vaccinations.
2] climate change crisis is “a hoax”. – Headlines alone refute this: fires, floods, deforestation, droughts, heat waves, oceans heating up, the arctic melting, animals and plants migrating away from the equator, and much more. Fossil fuel corporations admitted climate change was real in the 1970s – have fought against change ever since. Petro states and fossil fuel corporations pump out continual misinformation and lies about dangers to the earth, plants, animals, and people on it. Heat records are continually being set and reset…………..
*** “Fools are more dangerous than rogues.” [ George Bernard Shaw ]
3]. the 2020 American presidential election was ‘stolen” – The loser lost by 7 million popular votes. He lost by tens of thousands of votes in marginal ‘electoral college” states. Numerous people, including people from his own political party, acknowledged that he lost. Elections people from all over America testified to the honesty of the election. This BIG. LIE. has become a cult ‘loyalty test” – one must support this Big Lie to be in good standing with the sore loser.
4]. immigrants are ‘stealing American jobs”. – Farmers have testified they CANNOT get native-born Americans to do the back-breaking work their farms require. One farmer testified he has recruited immigrants for over 15 years because of this FACT. Business people have testified that without immigrants their own business would be in trouble, maybe have to close. America is short over 400,000 manufacturing workers right now. [ 6/24/25; New York Times ]
***. “Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.” [ Plato ]
5]. cutting taxes for the rich is “good’ for America; benefits will “trickle down” to ME. – This has been STATISTICALLY disproven for many years. What HAS happened since 1981 is an ever-increasing income & wealth gap between the rich and the lower 90-95%. There are record numbers of American billionaires, more being added virtually every year. Millions are “food insecure”; hundreds of thousands are homeless; many are forced to work 2-3 jobs to survive. Businesses serving middle class customers are closing. People are NOT having children because they cannot afford to have them. All this, and much more, because the wealth of America is NOT being SHARED like it was 1947-73.
6]. America was founded as a “Christian nation” – it was NOT. We have clear, specific quotes from Founding Fathers against this. Best of all, we have 17776-1800 state constitutions of the original 13 states against this [see Edwin Gaustad’s “Faith of the Founders, Appendix B]. Four states prohibited a “religious test for office” [Article VI]. 8 states banned an active minister from their state government!!! [if we were going to have a “Christian nation” – would not some of the most desirable peope be active ministers?????]. 10 states had language prohibiting an official state church [Amendment I]. North Carolina, 1776 Constitution, Articles XXXIV: “..neither shall any person, on any pretense whatsoever, be compelled to attend any place of worship contrary to his own faith..”, not have to pay to support ‘the maintenance of any minister or ministry contrary to what he believes is right..”

The Trump DICTATORSHIP – Stupidity, Cruelty, Corruption, Craziness, XXXXVI – Betraying his voters
*** “I play to people’s fantasies. People may not always think big themselves, but they can still get very excited by those who do. That’s why a little hyperbole never hurts. People want to believe that something is the biggest and the greatest and the most spectacular. I call it truthful hyperbole. It’s an innocent form of exaggeration – and a very effective form of promotion.” [ Donald John Trump: “The Art of The Deal” ]
Note: This post supplies excerpts from: “Trump Has Betrayed His Working-Class Voters” [New York Times “Round Table”; 7/6/25]:
“As President Trump was poised to sign his signature policy bill into law, Times Opinion asked seven of our conservative columnists and contributors a simple question: Will it be good for America or bad for America? The group we convened included libertarians, New Right thinkers and traditional conservatives. Here’s what they thought.
BEST PROVISION
— David Brooks: “The increase in the child tax credit…and the tax-advantaged savings accounts for children…Those policies are proven to decrease child poverty, and they are consistent with the general trend we shod be taking: Spend more on the young and less on the old.”
– – David French: “The defense spending increase…is necessary and overdue….Russian aggression has escalated and China is engaged in an immense military buildup.”
— Matt Labash: “Even if I hate the bill – and I do – it seems to deeply irritate Elon Musk. And anything that irritates Musk as much as Musk irritates the rest of us should earn grudging credit as a karmic delivery system.”
— Katherine Mangu-Ward: “Extending the income tax provision in Trump’s 2017 tax cuts was a perfectly reasonable thing to do [though it should have been paired with more spending cuts].”
— Daniel McCarthy: “Americans deserve to keep more of the money they earn, so the scope and scale of the tax cuts are the best part of the bill.”
— Curt Mills: “The president has a mandate to combat illegal immigration…The signature policy bill infuses Immigration and Customs Enforcement and related agencies with cash and personnel. it is justified.”
— Matthew Schmitz: “Trump’s most notable second-term successes have come at the border, where he has reduced illegal crossings, and on campus, where he has changed the relationship between government and universities.”
WORST PROVISION
— Brooks: “THe [at least] $3 trillion increase in the public debt over the first decade…When your interest rates are higher than your economic growth rates, that makes for a long-term catastrophe. Or maybe not so long term.”
— French: “The biggest problem with the bill is also the most obvious: Tax cuts can’t be a priority when we need a military buildup and lower deficits. Instead, the Trump administration has chosen the most fiscally reckless course.”
— Labash: “It screws the poor and rewards the rich. Anyone still laboring under the illusion that this is a populist administration needs to understand that “for the people” means “only some of the people,” usually the millionaires and billionaires.”
— Mangu-Ward: “The debt implications are straight up insane….”if made permanent, the Senate bill would cost more than the CARES Act, the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS Act combined.””
— McCarthy: “..until the Pentagon can pass a rigorous financial audit, this threatens to throw goos money after bad. Defense is the department most in need of the Department of Government Efficiency treatment.””
— Mills: “A cause of America’s malaise at home is its illegitimate and hated empire abroad. The U.S. military-industrial complex doesn’t put America first. the Defense Department deserves to be focused, not further bloated. this bill goes in the wrong direction.”
— Schmitz: “Promoting personal responsibility through Medicaid work requirements may be laudable in theory. But it seems a bit rich when legislators are voting for a bill that swells an already staggering deficit. If the G.O.P. really believed in hard work, thrift and personal responsibility, it would rein in its own profligacy.”
WHAT ELSE. MATTERED
— Brooks: “Trump was elected by winning working-class voters. and all they get is no tax on tips..and a few other trifles? Americans are feeling betrayed. Democrats can now correctly argue that Trump has betrayed his working-class voters.”
— French: ‘This bill is a further reminder that Republicans in Congress have no independent will…very little courage. Republicans instead choose to do the wrong thing to placate Trump.”
— Labash: “Principled conservatives never stood a chance of shooting down this measure. Because Trump knows his audience and knows that Republicans are now as completely unprincipled as he is. When you’re in the cultist business – which 95 percent of them are – you either fall in line or go out of business.”
— Mangu-Ward: “Adopting a current policy base to claim that tax-cut extensions cost little is budgetary sleight of hand that not only obscures bonkers deficits but also undermines the Senate filibuster..”
— McCarthy: “Pulling a bill this big with a majority so small in the House is a feat of extraordinary political acumen, like ir or not.”
— Mills: “Cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, or food stamps, are draconian. these are government programs that actually help younger Americans as this country lapses into gerontocracy.
— Schmitz: “You can’t keep slashing taxes while refusing to reduce spending. At some point, the G.O.P. will have to choose between tax cuts and entitlements.”

But they do worry about satisfying one particular president.” [Arne Carlson; Minnesota Star Tribune; 7/4/25]
1] “…there was no Democrat more vilified as a “reckless big spender” than President Lyndon Johnson, who was determined to fund an expanding war in Vietnam while launching his “Great Society” featuring Medicare, Medicaid and a host of antipoverty programs. Overall, his deficits averaged $12.4 billion, or o.8% of our gross domestic product..”
2]. “This grew to 2.2% of GDP when President Ronald Reagan assumed office in 1981 and nearly doubled during his term to 4%, largely as a result of massive tax cuts for the wealthy. Now, after further tax cuts for the wealthy by Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump [during his first term], that figure has risen to 6.7%. Overall, our national debt has increased from $908 billion when Reagan took office to more than $36 trillion today, an increase of 3,864%. [NOTE: read this again – “…largely as a result of massive tax cuts for the wealthy.” These obscene tax cuts for the rich are THE source of much American fiscal crises – and – are, and will be, used as excuses for more austerity. Roughly 27% of all federal spending today is from borrowed money, and the more we cut taxes on the wealthy, the more debt we accumulate and the more vital spending that is in serious jeopardy.” [Under Trump this is now a FACT. 1] “Sometimes violent political speech is obvious, like the president calling former representative Liz Cheney a war hawk who should know what it feels like when “the guns are trained on her face.” But sometimes violent political speech is not what is said but isn’t said. Or even the way that it isn’t said. It was evident in President Trump’s insistence that those who stormed the U.S. Capitol in 2021 were “very special,” instead of violent insurrectionists. It was clear, too, in his callous response to last weekend’s assassinations, an obvious case of the dangerous escalation of political violence.”

The administrative and electoral bureaucracy can and likely will continue to function. By that definition, our institutions are fracturing before our very eyes. Nowhere is that more evident than in our broken Congress.”

1]. “Donald J. Trump got a small taste last year of life as a cryptocurrency mogul. His stake in World Liberty Financial, the cryptocurrency firm…earned about $57 million, making it one of the Trump family’s most lucrative investments in 2024. And a licensing deal involving a related industry, NFT collectibles, produced another $1.2 million.
2]. “Since Mr. Trump took office a second time this year, his crypto fortunes have skyrocketed through a series of business ventures that pose unprecedented conflicts of interest.
